In 2008, the University Council of the Universidad Nacional approved the opening of a new North and Caribbean Huetar Regional Section, located in the district of Horquetas in the largest canton of the province of Heredia, Sarapiquí, as a higher education option for the communities in the North and Caribbean Zone.

This Regional Section offers an academic programs for students from all over the country, but especially for those in the area of influence, which has had a positive impact on the region.

It consists of 8 schools, 2 institutes or research centers, 3 master's degrees programs and 1 doctoral program:

In 2008, a team made up of economists, administrators, social scientists, and physical health professionals, developed a project to transform a former fumigation facility for nearby plantations into a university campus."

 

From 2015 to 2022, this Campus gradually increased its student population, reaching a sustained enrollment of more than 600 regular students in 2021. It led to a change in all the curricula, with 90% of the academic staff now coming from the area, and it has and the administrative staff is committed to and identifies with the values and principles for which this Regional Section was created.

In this Regional Section, more than 90% of the enrolled population comes from public daytime and evening schools.

Over the years, more than 900 degrees undergraduate and graduate degrees have been awarded, 90% of which have gone to young people from the area.

Since its inception, the development of Substantive Action Modalities has been encouraged, and projects that address issues and topics related to indigenous territories, food security, academic success and support for secondary school students and older adults, among others. have been consolidated.

Educational management and prospecting for the strengthening of higher education in the North and Caribbean Huetar Region

It provides information, knowledge and follow-up regarding opportunities for access to UNA-certified higher education, focusing on students completing secondary education in the day and evening modalities, secondary school leavers, as well as indigenous, rural and Afro-Costa Rican populations in the North Huetar Norte and Caribean regions. They receive tools for a successful enrolment process, which is reflected in continuously growing enrolment.

Mathematics with an ethnomathematical focus: evaluation and training

Aimed strengthening mathematics education with the ethnomathematical approach of the Regional Office of the Ministry Publico Education in the Sulá de Talamanca through the socio-educational evaluation of the seventh-year textbook Kulkuok I Cha and the creation of teacher training modules that contribute to the strengthening of cultural identity and indigenous rights through an intercultural education system. The involvement of indigenous peoples in the creation and restructuring of current knowledge makes this project one of the most ambitious, visionary and inclusive of this Regional Section.
