The School of Education of the Universidad Nacional, heir to the traditional Normal School of Costa Rica, was established in 1976, and, in from 1983, the University Council approved its operation as a Center for Research and Teaching in Education(CIDE).

It is made up of 4 divisions, 1 research institute, 10 degree programs, 4 master's degrees and 11 degree programs shared with other disciplines at the University.

Within its structure, it has the Specialized Library in Education and the Student Support Office.

As part of its work to disseminate knowledge, CIDE has two indexed academic scientific journals, “Educare” and “Ensayos Pedagógicos”, which periodically publish content on education from different countries.

CIDE is organized into 4 divisions:

The Basic Education Division (DEB) trains professionals in the areas of Preschool, Education from the 1st to 6th grades of the General Basic Education, and Special Education. It offers a Professional Master's Degree Program in Pedagogy with an emphasis on Diversity in educational processes.

The Rural Education Division (DER) has been linking academic life with the life of people living in rural contexts for more than 35 years and addresses to the specific needs of the country's indigenous populations in its curriculum design.

It offers a Bachelor's Degree Program in Education with an emphasis in Rural Education and Education from the 1st to 6th grades of the General Basic Education, and a Master's Degree Program in Central American Rural Education.

The Division of Education for Work has more than 30 years of experience in training people who can venture not only into educational fields, but also into various work settings. It offers degrees in Counseling and Educational Administration.

It offers a Master's Degree Program in Educational Management with an emphasis on Leadership, to promote educational management focusing on pedagogical, curricular, administrative, research and ethical knowledge, with a humanist and socially-oriented vision.

The Educology Division offers a degree in Pedagogy and a Master's Degree Program in Education with a specialization in: University Teaching, Student Affairs, Teaching English as a Second Language or Teaching Spanish as a Second Language.

This division is responsible for the pedagogical training of secondary school teachers in the areas of: Science, Mathematics, Spanish, Social Studies, English, French, Music Education, Religion, Educational Computing, Business Education, Philosophy, Physical Education, Agricultural Sciences and Plastic Arts.
